About Credit Counseling

A thing that comes to mind very often is credit counseling. It seem that a lot of people are not aware of what it is.

Let’s say that you have financial trouble and the creditors are standing at your door or you are getting the phone calls from them, chances are that you will need credit counseling. Credit counseling will work with you and the creditors arranging for smaller monthly lump sums to help pay of your debt.
It is often talked about in the same context as debt negotiation and debt settlement but it is two different processes.

You might find that this could be of benefit for you so here is what to watch out for if you decide to go ahead.

First of all, there is no quick fix so don’t let anybody tell you different. Seek advice from a credit service for a company that is accredited and has a reputation with them. There are a lot of scams out there so be aware. Avoid the ads that tell you about a quick fix.

Once you have found the ones you want to work with make sure they are not asking for a large sum upfront, it usually doesn’t work that way so it might be a scam.

You will meet with them and give all your information pertaining to your bills.

Leave nothing out as they will contact your creditors and make the required arrangements for your payments. They will then give you a payment schedule so you can start paying down your debt. Many times they are able to get interest payments reduced and also voided in many places so your payments will be lower.

Many companies also offer debt management service were that are doing all the payments for you. The only thing you do is pay the counseling company the full amount and they will distribute it amongst the creditors. Be aware of this though, some companies have been known to default on payments.

After this you get to sit back and have things taken care of by your counseling company.
Their cost for the service should not be high. Ask for prices before deciding on your company.
